While I’m all for progress, I also love the fact there are people out there working to protect these systems that helped fashion the very fabric of modern gaming. With the internet now seeping into every facet of our lives it is difficult to justify having physical media cluttering up our limited space, so arcade machines are now sadly on the endangered species list. At our house we are superfluous in modern games with all their fancy graphics, yet here was my son and me having the best time ever on a game I played as a kid. Some of my favourite systems were there such as the Simpsons Arcade machine and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I would say it is one of the best games you can play if you need a breather from a stressful day at work or if you just have nothing to do during your free time.Two years ago I took my son to the National Videogame Museum (Sheffield) in the UK and we had an absolute blast. It is very challenging and thrilling despite its simple graphics and design. Meat Boy is a very fun game that you would consider an underrated treasure. Winning the game will really just rely on being able to get the timing of your jumps right in order to complete the level and reach the princess. While the controls are simple, do not be surprised when you find yourself hitting the spacebar repeatedly and with added force each time. There is nothing else you need to worry about when it comes to controlling Meat Boy’s movements. You need to press on the arrow keys to control Meat Boy’s direction and then press on the spacebar to make him jump. This feature of the game might remind you of Minecraft, except it is in 2D and follows a jumping platformer gameplay. You can place Meat Boy anywhere on the map as its starting point.

Of course, you can go ahead and try to survive your creation. Put walls, grass, and even meat grinders wherever you would like! Map making is equally as fun as the actual game itself. Building blocks of different types will also be made available to you and you can use them to design your map’s path. You get to choose different map backgrounds and decide whether you would like to add in a scrolling map feature or to just keep it unmoving. Meat Boy gives you the chance to create and design your own map. You should also look out for meat grinders! Landing on them will mean instant death so be careful. You have to remain above the bottom line and not get caught in its movement, otherwise, you will restart the level. There are maps that will continuously scroll upwards. Some levels are not going to wait for you try and try until you get the hang of jumping from wall to wall. Aside from timing, it is also important to be able to properly control and direct Meat Boy. It would always take me several tries before I am able to properly time my jumps. There are levels where you will find it difficult to jump from one wall to another because of how far they are apart. Imagine my surprise when I found myself having a hard time trying to surpass level 3! The game has its own special twists that are really challenging.

The first level of the game is very easy that it will make you think you are in for a simple and effortless game. It is a very cute platformer game where you will have to jump from wall to wall in order to rescue the princess.
